Proofreading Let's say your project is at the point where you're nearly ready to turn it loose, but you have a sneaking suspicion that it may not be as perfect as it seems. Maybe you know this from experience, or maybe you think you're paranoid, but the fact is you may be right. Our own writing errors are the ones we're most likely to miss, and this even goes for seasoned writers. What you probably need is an experienced proofreader. There are few things more embarrassing than finding out that the writing project you were proud of, the one you spent what seemed like hours scrutinizing and reading backwards and forwards, contains errors. After all, when you sent that project out into the world--whether it was a letter, a short story submission, a novel or memoir manuscript to the printer, or a business proposal--it carried your good name with it. You wanted it to be as perfect as possible. The problem is that we're all in such a hurry these days that finding the time to edit our work effectively can be difficult if not impossible. Proofreading includes checking for spelling, light grammar, and formatting, as well as elements of internal consistency such as tables of contents, pagination and page numbering, excessive word and phrase repetition, font use, and unique spellings. However, it does not include stylistic revisions like heavy grammar or rewriting. For that, see Line Editing. The fee for proofreading is calculated based on a few different scenarios. Snail Mail-Snail Mail: You send the document to me via mail, I mark up the pages, pop them back in the mail to you. Electronic-Snail Mail: You send me the document via e-mail (Word format preferred), I print it, mark it up, send it back to you by snail mail. Electronic-Electronic: You zip me the document electronically (Word format preferred), I open it and make the changes myself. Then I send it back to you electronically.
